The Color Code: A Self-Defense Skill That Costs Nothing
The most valuable self-defense skill isn’t a gun or a technique — it’s awareness. The classic framework is the color code, and it costs nothing to practice:
- White — Unaware: tuned out, phone in your face. Fine at home; risky in public.
- Yellow — Aware: relaxed but switched on, simply noticing your surroundings. This is where you want to live.
- Orange — Alert: something specific has your attention. You focus on it and start planning exits and options.
- Red — Alarm: a real threat is here and you act on a decision you already made — prepared, not panicked.
The goal isn’t paranoia; it’s moving smoothly between levels as things change. Done right, awareness buys you the one thing that decides outcomes in a crisis: time.
