Air Travel With a Firearm
Federal TSA regulations govern how firearms must be transported on commercial aircraft. These rules apply regardless of your destination state's laws. Always also check your airline's specific policies, which may be stricter than TSA minimums.

Tip: in the print dialog, choose “Save as PDF” as the destination to download a copy.

⚠️ Key Principle:

Carrying a firearm onboard a commercial aircraft is a federal felony. Firearms may ONLY be transported in checked baggage, declared at check-in, and stored in a hard-sided locked container. There are no exceptions.

🔒 TSA Federal Requirements (Checked Baggage Only)

1. Hard-Sided Locked Container Required

The firearm must be in a hard-sided container that is completely secured with a TSA-approved lock or your own lock. The container must not be accessible by anyone other than you. Soft cases, gun socks, and unlocked cases are not permitted.

2. Declare at Check-In — No Exceptions

You must declare the firearm to the airline at the ticket counter during check-in. Do not attempt to check a bag with a firearm without declaration. You will be required to complete a firearms declaration tag to be placed inside the case.

3. Firearm Must Be Unloaded

The firearm must be completely unloaded. The chamber must be empty. All magazines must be removed from the firearm (they may travel in the same case or separately, depending on airline policy — verify with your carrier).

4. Ammunition Transport Rules

Ammunition must be in the original manufacturer's packaging or in a sturdy box designed for ammunition. It may be in the same locked hard case as the unloaded firearm. Loose rounds in a bag or pocket are not permitted. Maximum of 11 lbs (5 kg) per passenger.

🚫 What is Never Permitted on Your Person or in Carry-On

Firearms, firearm parts, magazines (loaded or unloaded), ammunition, and realistic replica firearms are prohibited in carry-on baggage and on your person — including in overhead bins and personal items. Violations are federal offenses with significant civil penalties and possible criminal charges.

✈️ Airline-Specific Policies (Verify Before Flying)

Airlines may impose requirements stricter than TSA minimums. Policies vary on case type, lock requirements, magazine transport, and declaration procedures. Always verify directly with your carrier before travel.
